I fall into that category of parents who buy their kids a lot of toys. When I come across a toy, book, arts and craft item (the list really goes on..) that I think will be interesting and/or educational for him, I can’t help but head out and get it. They can vary a lot in their price, but I’ve come to realize that the simplest of toys can give him hours of fun and imaginative play. Like this IKEA cooking set.
We can spend the better part of the afternoon cooking invisible chicken soup, fish porridge, frying eggs and he never gets bored of it. Come tomorrow and it’s the same thing over again. It’s very fun, and cute.
I’m not a big fan of toys that do most of the work for him, those toys with too much lights, sounds and flashy animations. I feel the same way about TV for toddlers. So I really like toys like this IKEA set, which gives him lots of opportunity for imaginative pretend play.
When I was a child, a playmate of mine had this big Fisher-price kitchen set. It had a stove, oven, sink and barbecue grill and came with pots and pans and fake food, like burgers and buns. I was sooo envious! I’m fairly certain I’m reliving my desired childhood vicariously through my son here, but at least he’s benefiting from it developmentally!
